Sociology of Crime

You are required to write TWO short essays, responding to the questions below.

Each essay should be at least 500 words long, and no more than 750 words in total.

They should include in-text referencing and one reference list should be produced at the end of the document (covering both essays).

However, you should approach these questions like an exam, so focus on explaining your answers in your own words, rather than reproducing long quotes or paraphrasing closely from course material or course readings.

Essay Questions:

Select TWO of the theories below and write an essay about each theory chosen. Your essays should include the following components:

  1. An overview of the basic assumptions of each theory in relation to the root causes of crime;
  2. A summary of the basic assumptions of each theory in relation to how to best reduce crime; and
  3. A critique of the theory, e.g. what are its strengths and weaknesses in terms of its explanation of the root causes of crime, and its implications for crime control.
