In Wrong (2002), we will use Southeast Asian ovalocytosis as an example to investigate the effects of positive and negative selection on the genetics and survival of a population, and develop simple mathematical models to explain these effects. The goal will be to understand how the genetic process is making the best of a bad situation.
Essay question: Wrong (2002) and other further statistic studies suggest the simplistic assumption that the allele frequencies of these erythrocytic genes are dependent on just two factors, negative selection due to the disease caused by the mutation and positive selection due to malaria resistance. Discuss other factors that could influence the frequencies of these mutant alleles. (no more than 1500 words)
