This assignment comprises a detailed report on:
1. An exis? ng building which is considered ‘innova? ve’ in it’s applica? on of passive and/or
ac? ve services and systems.
2. One of the services/systems in the selected building
TASK:
• Each student/pair of students select a building (must be a built project) from anywhere in
the world. No more than 2 students can inves? gate any one building. To ensure this, students
are to email their selec? on to the subject coordinator as soon as this choice is made. The
subject coordinator will advise if the building has already been selected by other students
(fi rst in fi rst served!). Students may change buildings at any stage before the submission due
date as long as the building is not already selected by other students.
• The selected building needs to demonstrate the innova? ve use of technology in the design of
its services/systems. This can be ac? ve or passive systems i.e. ven? la? on, hea? ng and cooling,
energy genera? on, ligh? ng and dayligh? ng, water use and collec? on, waste treatment etc.
PART 1 – The Building:
• Provide details of the following:
– loca? on
– context
– size
– func? on(s)
– design inten? ons
– design team
– materiality
– clima? c response
– occupant considera? ons
– general details of the ‘innova? ve’ use of technology in the design of its services/
systems, considering the areas covered in this subject (Electrical, HVAC, Water, Fire)
– discuss why the above technology was used in this project
Along with your text, also present informa? on graphically (photos, drawings, sketches).
PART 2 – Innova? ve service/system:
• Select one service/system from the selected building and provide the following informa? on:
– Func? on – what does the service/system do?
– Benefi t – what is the benefi t of the system? (i.e. environmentally, socially, economically)
– Loca? on – where is the service/system typically located within a building?
– Spa? al requirements – how much space does the service/system require?
– How does the system work? include informa? on on components, opera? on and
maintenance
– any other informa? on you fi nd relevant
Include schema? c drawings of the service/system which describe the rela? onship between
components and integra? on within a building.

NOTES:
• The selected building cannot be a house.
• Check with the subject coordinator if you are unsure about your building and/or service/
system choice.
• The majority of the books listed on the recommended resources list contain chapters with
building case studies and may be a useful star? ng point for selec? ng the building for this
assignment.
REPORT REQUIREMENTS:
• Part 1 – minimum 1000 words, Part 2 – minimum 1500 words (excluding table of contents,
bibliography)
• Title page – including student names, student numbers, selected building name and word
count
• Table of contents with page numbers
• Structured with a logical framework i.e. arrange the content using sec? ons headings and
sub-headings if appropriate.
• Figures (charts, photos etc.) and tables – all numbered with cap? ons and referenced where
appropriate
• All fi gures and tables are to be referred to and discussed or explained in the text of your
report
• All fi gures and tables must be sharp and easily read – they must be of high enough
resolu? on to print clearly in the hard copy that you submit.
• Properly and fully referenced with a complete bibliography – this includes any pictures
that you have obtained from anywhere other than your own camera. All sources must be
acknowledged in the report, both as in-text cita? ons and in the bibliography. You may use
any academically recognised in-text referencing style.
• Only use footnotes for amplifi ca? on/explana? on of points which you cannot comfortably
explain within the main body of the text.
• Typed and bound or stapled together with a faculty cover sheet – do not use plas? c sleeves
or slip-in folders – comments can not be applied to your work if you do.
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA:
• PART 1 – concise, clear and comprehensive report with detailed discussion demonstra? ng
knowledge and understanding of the selected building
• PART 2 – concise, clear and comprehensive report with detailed discussion demonstra? ng
knowledge and understanding of the selected service/system
• Inclusion of appropriate fi gures and tables (photos, drawings and diagrams) which are
numbered, cap? oned, referenced and referred to within the report
• Complete and correct referencing
• Professionally presented report with no spelling or gramma? cal errors
